Why Do I Blog?

Having purpose is a wonderful thing. It gives passion, it builds self-esteem, it provides stepping stones.

I homeschool because I feel children do better at home. They are able to develop themselves in a safe and comfy environment. My purpose, therefore, for homeschooling, is to provide a home that opens doors to growth and discovery.

My purpose for blogging is something I need to give thought to. I started  first to give others a look at what we were doing, for those who might care. But that's not really enough purpose, or reason to keep a blog going. I need to provide some sort of service to others, my purpose should be to share what is possible with homeschooling.

So.. with that in mind I'll start by saying the best you can do is to guide your child to find their purpose, their passion, the thing that builds their self worth. In this pursuit you'll cross many paths. You can name these paths math, history, geography, science, reading, writing, but you must not allow these paths you cross to get in the way of your child's purpose. Most of them will serve a purpose toward the passion,  yet they will  not be the passion.

The trick is how to guide them toward that passion. I am coming to the conclusion it is not by assigning work. It is by exploring together. Explore the outdoors, learn about the trees, the flowers, the animals. Explore the sky, the clouds, the sun, the moon, the planets, the stars. Precious memories and deep connections are cemented in this exploration. Not just between the child and you, but between the both of you and the universe.

From this first exploration comes the books. The magical knowledge held within the books that will further explore the trees, the animals, the sky. And once you open that first book and your child peers into the magical pages to explore, passions will develop, purpose will be solidified.

This is what is possible with homeschooling. This is the best of what we can do. And when those times come that make you question what you are doing, and those times will come, just remember your purpose. When your purpose seems weak, or you feel like you've lost sight of this purpose, go exploring. You can't help but find your way back, if you take your child outside and look for signs of animals, search for flowers to name, or gaze at the foreverness of the sky.
